The Singing Inspector

My name is Benny and last week Mr Raymond the singing inspector came into the classroom and called upon the people he thought could sing. There were quite a few people who went with him and I was surprised when he called my name, Benny Black. I started to tremble I knew I couldn’t sing and I’ve heard stories about the things that happen to the people who didn’t meet Mr Raymond’s standards. I looked at the people who didn’t get up and knew they had great joy in their hearts when they didn’t hear their names being called out.

When we got into the singing room Mr Raymond called upon Charles and I first. We both were terrified and we said to each other “Maybe if we don’t sing anything he’ll tell us to sit down again” but that wasn’t what happened. He screamed at the top of his lungs “Sing now or you’ll be expelled” and as his face faded from deep red back to a peachy colour I spoke.”Uh Mr Raymond we don’t know a lot of songs but we know Pretty Polly”. I knew Charles knew that song. Mr Raymond once again yelled at the top of his voice “Sing it then” and as his face turned a peachy colour again we started to sing.”Pretty Polly how wonderful you are” “Pretty Polly you are so far” “Over the moonlight when the sun dies” “Pretty Polly oh how pretty you are”. I thought we sounded pretty good but I must either have a bad taste for music or we were absolutely down right bad. When we ended Mr Raymond shouted again “You two are absolutely rubbish, I don’t think there are worse singers than you idiots”. So we sat down again. We walked out of the classroom feeling quite bad so we went to eat our lunch and forgot about it.
